One of my favorite pieces of music! When Vaughan Williams began composing music based on English folk themes, it was as radical as Rock and Roll. For centuries music was based and taught in Germanic, and Italian standard, and styling, this was a big deal, around the same time Dvorak was mesmerizing the world with the use of Slavic folk melodies, then came to America to write a truly American piece which he based on African-American melodies. I think, and have felt since I was about ten years old, that there was a great renaissance happening from the mid- 1800s until about 1980, where music, art, and literature was leading, or reflecting a greater truth.
