One of the best vampire movies ever made is one youve never heard of. Id forgotten how terrific this 1987 flick about a Gypsy-like traveling family of vampires in Texas was until I pulled it from the dusty shelves of the Mike Patrick Film Library tonight. Sure, it has a couple of 1980s movie trappings, such as Car Explosions For No Scientific Reason, a couple of honest-to-goodness wipe scene transitions, and the Final Shot Freeze Frame With Slow Zoom Before The End Credits. But in between is an awesomely original take on the vampire myth, directed with style and flair by Kathryn Bigelow, who went on to direct The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, and earlier, the underrated Blue Steel and Strange Days. Come to think of it, yup, shes actually one of my favorite directors. And not for nothing, but Stephen Kings overrated literary The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep owes a lot to this movie, which is better by far than Doctor Sleep, and requires far less investment in time. Netflix this one, friends, and leave Doctor Sleep on the library shelf.
