One of the biggest challenges in solving public problems is that a lot of people believe, sincerely, that they know the solution instinctively. There is an inexplicable belief that social science is just gut instinct and that things like data, research, etc. have no value. Oddly enough, when their children learn social sciences, this is not what they would like them to learn, but they nonetheless convey this view themselves repeatedly. Everyone is entitled to a view, as a citizen or resident, about how things should be done. But thats quite different from knowing how a problem can be solved, or the history of such efforts in other places. That will always be invaluable, and must guide our interventions.
