One of the biggest novelty hits of all time takes us all the way back to the spring of 1958...Ross Bagdasarian (who recorded under the name David Seville) brewed up a monster #1 hit with The Witch Doctor. Later that year, David created The Chipmunks and won a Grammy award for his Christmas classic The Chipmunk Song with the help of Simon, Theodore and Alvin. Ross/David wrote hits for others, had his own prime time TV show, and appeared in several motion pictures, but was only 52 when he died of a heart attack on January 16, 1972. His son, Ross Jr., resurrected the act in 1980. Heres a vintage clip from The Ed Sullivan Show:
