One of the easiest changes we can make to our homes is clearing out the clutter. And yet it seems that every time we throw out the junk mail and straighten up our counters, the mess creeps back up on us within a week (or in a matter of days, for some of us). Interior designer Marc Thee has heard your cluttered cries and produced his “Top Six Design Tips for Decluttering This Summer,” which was published on Altogether Home. So without further ado, here are Thee’s favorite clutter-busting tips in six steps. Step 1: Make your house picture-perfect. Thee recommends setting up a photo shoot in your home. But don’t get fancy. Simply click some pictures in each room — trying to get all components in the frame — and then ask yourself this: Are these rooms magazine-worthy? If the answer is no, “edit the clutter.” Step 2: Call in the Clutter Busters. “‘Clutter Busters’ are inexpensive, stylish organizers that you can easily incorporate in any living space.” Invest in some baskets, bins, lidded boxes and trays, and start your stylish storage makeover. Step 3: Drain away the counter clutter. Your bathroom should be the least cluttered space in your home. But it’s easy for toiletries and personal accessories to pile up on the countertops. Try Clutter Buster-type storage — such as a lidded, nontransparent box for the countertop — and place all toiletries and personal items that won’t fit in the vanity or cabinet drawers in the box. Trays are also a great way to organize the clutter. Thee recommends displaying clear jars that hold cotton swabs, facial wipes, etc. Step 4: Set your mail jail FREE! How often do you pick up the mail, open up the bills and invitations, and then drop the junk mail on the counter, table and dresser? This creates what Thee calls a “mail jail.” Try an envelope sorter, and designate the slots for bills, RSVP correspondence and important info. The junk mail should go straight into the recycling bin. Thee also recommends opening your mail beside the recycling bin so you can toss as you read. Step 5: Don’t forget you have a dining room (if you do actually have a dining room). Most people eat in the kitchen and save their dining room for holidays and special occasions. Why not dine there all year round? This can “more effectively allocate your home living space and cut down on clutter,” according to Thee. And reduce the clutter in your kitchen by storing some kitchenware in the dining room. Step 6: Never be afraid of color (or white). When you declutter your home, you can use the colors in your room to “create a suggestion of freshness.” Thee recommends using white in the summer: “A white base is critical to a successful summery bedroom.” Try white linens, pillows and duvets. Once you have the white base, accessorize with bold, light, bright colors. Remember: Any color goes with white.
