One of the first bills passed in the new Congress will help Oregon’s coastal residents prepare for a tsunami by increasing local emergency coordination. It’s a great start, but it’s also a reminder that the U.S. is woefully behind the rest of the world when it comes to investing in technology that can save lives and protect our coastal economies. Every other country that has experienced a major earthquake or tsunami learned its lesson and immediately began building early warning systems, including Japan, China, Mexico and even Romania. But not the United States. It’s time to stop dragging our feet and take the disaster threat seriously, before it’s too late. Watch my floor speech below:
