One of the funniest stories I remember my mother telling me about - TopicsExpress

One of the funniest stories I remember my mother telling me about her childhood was when she was in high school. One day she and her best friend decided to cut school and went downtown. They lived near Washington, DC, so going downtown was a big deal and involved riding the streetcar and probably even some fun “retail therapy” (ie: shopping), or at least window shopping, which involved looking but not buying. Everything was going just “fine” they thought, until they came across a “man on the street” interviewing from a local radio station. He was handing out samples of Wonder Bread and asking what people thought…ON LIVE RADIO! Instead, of steering clear of the Wonder Bread Man, these two innocent teenagers actually sampled the bread and GOT INTERVIEWED ON THE AIR! It wasn’t until after they did that that they realized to their peril that their secret was exposed! When my mother told me this story, I laughed and said, “What were you thinking?!” How many times do we innocently do the wrong thing, never realizing that we will be found out? Or doing something wrong hoping we don’t get caught? I can totally relate to my mother and her crazy antics. Even though I strive to live my life like God would want, I do not always succeed. In fact, I often fail miserably. I imagine God often says to me “What were you thinking?!” Sometimes our sins are not blatant rebellious acts. Sometimes they’re as innocent as sneaking through a stop sign without fully stopping (my driver ed. teacher always said, “it says STOP, not HESITATE!”), or telling just the tiniest of white lies. Living our lives in a Godly way is often a continuous challenge. The possibility of getting caught should not be the reason we choose not to sin. It should be because we love the Lord and desire to do what is right. As Margaret Thatcher once said, “Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is looking”. I try to remind myself that when I am tempted to do something that is not right, I should step back, take a deep breath, and remember that I want to live my life for Jesus, not for me. Just my thought for the day…. have a blessed one! “Listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His eyes…” - Exodus 15:26
