One of the greatest treasurers that we have at Four Decades Jewelry has been nicely tucked away at his bench for well over the past 30 years working on his craft like no other in the Portland area and he has done it with the ease and skill of a Master. Born and raised in the town of Ghent, Belgium, surround by beauty and history, Jerome Verrijden first began the long process as an apprentice in his teens. Carving ivory developed into fine lettering, scenery and much more. Over the last 63 years as a fine artist he has also tried his hand in many different avenues as a sculptor, the designing of many pieces and stationary, ring tops, ships on watches and family crests, just to name a few. His abilities and eye for detail seem to be endless for a talented man well into his 80’s. He’s love of the challenge keeps him going to this day. But there will come a time in the very near future wear he will retire. It seems at this time hand engraving is quickly becoming a lost art, taken over by machines and computers like so many other handcrafts through the ages.
