One of the more heartbreaking interviews Ive had to do. An elementary school teamed up with local businesses to build a playset for a student going through chemo. I get to the home, though, and learn that he has a disease that causes lots of tumors to grow all over his body. Most are ok to leave alone. But this most recent tumor is on his brain, behind his left eye. He already cant see much out of his right eye. He also has tons of developmental issues because of this and can hardly string two words together. His grandmother is his legal guardian. She adopted him because his father is a drug addict and currently in jail. He was in and out of foster care, along with his twin sisters, for years and abused by several foster parents. The twins have been adopted by the other grandmother. Theres also a younger brother. A complete ham, who kept stealing my keys and held my hand as he led me to see the swingset. I asked if he and his brother got along. No, he said, because he always takes the blue swing from me. To top it off, this grandmother has allowed her ex-husband to move in with her. He has a pulmonary disease and can only use about 14% of his lung capacity. He has nobody else to take care of him. And now I need to write an article based on all this. I thought I was just writing about a swingset.
