One of the more important lessons Ive learned while working with Jason Brown on the NWAV-AP paper is that when it comes to typologies, universals and variations, it is just as important to ensure that the variations being analyzed are, in fact, variations of the language(s) and not random aberrations derived by imposing an external statistical framework on the language(s) (cf. rhythm metrics, isochrony, statistical durational variations etc.), as it is to identify and analyze true variations. As Carl Sagan so eloquently put it, A rational scientist must fight the temptation to see patterns where there are none, especially when existence of the said patterns could potentially promise delectable outcomes. But, be that as it may, I love Wellington, and I am looking forward to going back next year!
