One of the most amazing career transformations in recent history - TopicsExpress

One of the most amazing career transformations in recent history must be that effected by Matthew McConaughey. Once best known for getting his shirt off in Jennifer Aniston movies, hes recently been seen in some top class acting roles and Dallas Buyers Club sets the bar pretty high. Its not just the Christian Bale In The Machinist physical transformation he achieves here thats jaw-dropping. He submits a mesmerising performance as Ron Woodrof, a redneck electrician, part time rodeo rider and full-time homophobe who after an accident at work finds himself diagnosed with HIV and given 30 days to live. For a short while, he (understandably) goes on a drug-fuelled bender. But then his survival instincts kick in and he starts to do some research. He soon discovers that the Government approved drug for his illness, AZT, isnt necessarily the best choice out there - but the alternatives arent officially available, so its against the law to import them. Woodrof decides to get himself fixed up by any means possible. Dallas Buyers Club is a fascinating tale of survival against the odds and McConaugheys blistering characterisation is ably supported by Jared Leto as his cross-dressing business partner, Rayon. Leto is so good in this, you cant help wondering why he doesnt make more films. Superb stuff. 4.8 stars.
