One of the most effective ways to raise awareness, advance research and educate the public about ALS/MND is to put a face on the disease by sharing the real stories of those who live with it on a daily basis. Facts and figures alone just cant convey whom ALS/MND affects—our brothers and sisters, our fathers and mothers, husbands and wives, our children, best friends and those we have yet to meet. In the wake of the Ice Bucket Challenge, Vince Vitrano, news anchor at Milwaukee, Wisconsin television station TMJ 4 wanted to show the world how ALS/MND has affected his cousin Shane Gahagan. Please watch and share this powerful and touching story about the realities of living with this devastating disease. Shane Gahagan was diagnosed with ALS/MND six years ago. Using only his eyes and a computer, he explains how physically and mentally difficult living with ALS/MND really is. Drawing inspiration from his daughter and his incredibly supportive family, Shane lives with and fights the disease in his own way. He continues to bring joy to his family, and is truly an inspiration to all of us. What’s your story? Whether you are a patient, family member, friend, caregiver, neurologist or neuroscientist, sharing your unique perspective can help provide comfort, hope, inspiration and guidance to people worldwide who are also facing this devastating disease. Please email your story (a brief video or article/photo) to Barry M. Wein at [email protected] and we may share it in an upcoming Facebook post, ALS Worldwide e-newsletter and/or on our website. Thank you.
