One of the most heart-wrenching things I hear people say about - TopicsExpress

One of the most heart-wrenching things I hear people say about their health status is going to die of something. Yes, we are, agreed. And wouldnt it be great if thats all there was to it? A stroke can leave someone without their prior abilities for a months or years, or their personal forever. Who this is harder on is a toss, the family, the main caregiver, the person who can no longer function mentally and/or physically? Some medication may be considered optional, some is crucial to prevent stroke or heart attack. Eating healthy and exercising is a HUGE part of stroke prevention. BUT sometimes medication is necessary. I continue to mention my dad, who wasnt taking his coumadin and wasnt wearing his cpap machine. He did not realize what risk he was taking. Now, 3 months after the stroke, he can speak and he remembers some things, but other things are far from routine. In his mind, the nights are the worst, with realistic nightmares that are hard to shut off when he does wake up. Inability to know when its time to go to the toilet. Inability to even walk across the room alone or just go from bed to chair without help. He works at all of this, and right beside him every day is Nana, going through this with Dad, every day, all day long. He can smile and giggle now, little things bring out a funny story. I am thankful he can laugh about things that arent going so great. At the same time he has to be totally cared for in all of his needs. Stroke prevention is personal to me moreso than ever.
