One of the most significant myths perpetrated on all of us has been that Aboriginal people lived in an uncivilized state in North America and that we were Hunter-Gatherer Societies lacking in the sophistication to have forms of government equivalent to those in Europe at the time of contact. The fact that such myths come from a position of racial bias has not been explored in historical analysis, nor has the fact that such information has no basis in research. It is the equivalent of concluding that European Societies were Hunter-Gatherers based on the lives of Eruopean trappers and traders in the fur trade. You have to ignore a lot of other important evidence to come to that conclusion. North America has been relatively unexplored as a source of civilization by archeologists and anthroploogists who follow the almost biblical theory that all life began in Africa, and all civilization comes from Europe. While some are fighting such foundational thinking, it is a war that has not yet been won, just as the war over whether Aboriginal people had a real form of government and real laws is still ongoing. When evidence such as this is uncovered which shows clearly that Aboriginal people were living in cities larger than almost all European cities at the same moment in history, it so boggles the minds of the established theorists, that it fails to compute. It gets ignored and the old teaching of our being unsophisticated hunter-gatherers continues. This article was published in 2004. The textbooks used in our schools today dont mention this and similar discoveries of our sophisticated structures and thinking. We should not tolerate that.
