One of the perks of visiting Andy in New York as often as Ive been able to over the years is that sometimes weve had the opportunity to dine with various celebrities (John Cleese at Aqua Vit to name one). One afternoon not very long ago, Andy and I were eating at the Union Cafe in Union Square near Andys workplace. In walked Philip Seymour Hoffman, barely recognizable in his shorts and baseball cap. He had ridden his bike there; I was concerned that he wasnt wearing a helmet. I guess I should have been more concerned. Im so saddened by his sudden death today. His talent was immeasurable. What Ill remember most, however, was how absolutely non-starlike he looked eating lunch at the end of the counter that day. Sigh :-(
