One of those satisfying moments as a parent that only parents will understand. Olivia starts Year 3 this year and I encourage her at the start to set a goal. After a month of showing her how to find a worthy goal, and explaining that her special gift in life(purpose) is wrapped in working hard at developing that which she loves doing and that which she is good at. She sets her goal. Come first term parent interviews, I am told Olivia is doing well at school but Maths needs work. I explain that I am a terrible singer and you could have the best singer in the world give me tuition all day and I would only very incrementally improve and would get frustrated. I say my request is that she looks for Olivias gifts, and help her, encourage her and reward her and put more focus in that area. I dont tell her Olivia has set a goal to be the first in her year 3 class to get her pen license because I dont want that to have a bearing on Olivia earning it(shes in a year 3/4 class). They normally dont get a pen license until year 4. Olivia works incredibly hard day day in and out to have exemplary book work, to earn the privilege of writing with a pen and towards the end of the year she has many of the year 4 kids in her class encouraging her saying she has the neatest book work and she should get her pen license. Then, while shes away from school recently because her English family is over staying with us she hears through after school activities that one of the girls in another year 3 class gets her pen license and her shoulders slump forward. I encourage her and say your not competing against anyone but yourself, keep working hard, your hard work and persistence will be rewarded at the right time. The next day she finds out that she also got it, first person in her year 3 class but she was away. The satisfaction only those who have worked so hard for something they are passionate about lights up her eyes as she tells me about her accomplishment. My eyes well up and I only get inspired to do the same with some of my goal seeing her face radiate with self respect and enthusiasm that the hard work and determination has developed. This long post is a recognition of very good teaching from Laura Blatch at St Phillips and the hard work and achievement of her first goal in life. Well done Olivia, we are so proud of you darling.
