One thing that I really disliked about the American coverage of the Scottish referendum was their incessant need to reference William Wallace. No, not the actual William Wallace but the Mel Gibson movie version which is... inaccurate. Is this seriously all the Scottish history Americans can be bothered to learn? I mean seriously! Its like they stop at King Edward I and just completely forget about King James I (AKA King James VI of Scotland) who was a direct descendent of the famous King Robert the Bruce of Scotland who was responsible for Scotland gaining independence in 1328 (the two nations were reunited under the crown by the elevation of James I to the throne and officially united 100 years later) and who is a direct ancestor of the current royal family. Its dang embarrassing. Heaven forbid we endeavor to understand some history.
