One year ago today I woke up in the US again. I woke to unlimited hot water, the ability to wash my clothes in a machine rather than a bathtub and the sound of television - something I had rarely heard or seen for 27 months in Ukraine. I did not hear the sounds of all the students in the dormitory preparing for the day with shouts and running feet. I felt that I was not home - but that I had been torn from home. I had more comforts, but less sense of belonging. I woke up in a house full of things - but missing the tiny apartment full of memories. I was glad to be back in the US, but sorry to be away from my home in Ukraine. The sense of disconnect improves but continues.
