One year ago tomorrow March 31 Easter Sunday our life was changed. We had just got home around 8am from spring break vacation in Florida. Skylan had not been his self the whole trip. We thought he was starting terrible twos ( early). Sunday morning he started throwing up non stop and diarrhea. Not keeping anything down including pedilyte. So off to the ER Whitney & I went. Figuring he caught a virus or something while on vacation. We could not have been any more shocked when the news came in. Type 1 diabetes. His sugar level was over 900, not even registering. I can honestly say I had never been so scared in my life. To see the look on Whitneys face and in her eyes was...indescribable. Being told if we would have chosen to wait and check in with his pediatrician the next day ( not over reacted by coming to the ER) he probably would have not made it. He was within hours of a diabetic coma. We were rushed to Kosairs and stayed until Wednesday night. Those days seem to be a blur. The fear of not understanding, the nurses, doctors, educators, just the unknown. I seen a side of my daughter I had never seen. She was going to do whatever it took, as long as it took to understand and learn to help her baby. She became a momma bear protecting her cub. Even though she was scared to death. Skylans life depended on her! Well, its been a year. Its been a learning experience for all. Anyone who cares for Skylan has a great responsibility. Whitney, Cj, Meredith, and his wonderful daycare teacher Jenny Hupp. Jenny took control and went in head first learning everything she needed to. It means so much, because she DIDNT have to. These people are the ones that will count his carbs at every meal, and recount and recount. Not to mention reading every label so ALL carbs are counted for!! check him with the finger pricks while he is napping or his nighttime sleep. They rejoice when his meter reads good numbers and panics at the low & high numbers. Some people still ask how often does he get a shot? Or how often does his blood get checked? He gets a shot every time he eats. Unless his numbers are extremely low... Which isnt good. His fingers are pricked average 2/3 hours. We are learning to recognize when he is feeling funny and so is he. He may hold his head or ask you to quit yelling. ( when no one is yelling) he may even gets his camo bag( his diabetes kit) and say check my sugar. I have had people say ... At least he doesnt have cancer. And some other pretty insensitive comments. No he does not and we are very thankful for that. We are thankful he can run, jump, learn and live life! Imagine taking your child or grandchild to the park or a fun outing. First make sure you have their supplies and their food. Then make sure before they start playing you do a sugar check. ( finger prick) which may mean they need an extra 20 carbs for play time! They run and play hard laughing and being a kid. Now your hoping that means they wear themselves out so they nap. Not so much with sky. You then again need to check his sugar and make sure its not to low before you load up in the car or take a nap. Its a constant game of numbers. Everything takes time, preparation and thought. He will not out grow this. The insulin is not a cure, it allows him to live. If you have met Skylan you know what a loving, sweet, smart, inquisitive little boy he his. I believe things happen in our lives to teach us and to make us grow in our faith. And sometimes I think to help others through their battles. We are still figuring things out and learning everyday. Do your self a favor if your unaware of diabetes. Type 1 or Type 2. Look it up, read about it. They are two different conditions but both very serious. With ANY life threatening medical condition. I think we owe it to those we care for and love to learn as much as we can about what they are dealing with. The last picture may seem graphic for some. But its based on the injections and injection sights for 1 month of a child with Type 1 diabetes.
