Ongoing Battle—for “Stuff”? Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome (Genesis 32:28). Scripture: Genesis 32:22-30 Song: “Fight the Battle in the Body” In my professional life, I’ve had many adventures that were generally driven by financial need. My first jobs were the typical teenager jobs: video store, pizza place, hamburger and ice cream shop, and franchise restaurants. During those times, I was beginning to earn my own money and discover what it was like to be “independently wealthy.” In the decade that followed, I began training and searching for jobs that would further my financial well-being. And during this whole time, I battled with God about what I was supposed to have and how I was supposed to get it. My problem was that I so often sacrificed family, friends, and coworkers to forward my own agenda. I was once in a lawsuit over a $12 late fee for video rentals. Through all of these battles, I did not prepare. I had no armor, no vision of the goal, and no strategy. I was financially driven to obtain the things “society” seemed to tell me I needed. I had far more than most at an early age. And yet, I selfishly held on to my stuff. During the 10 years after that, I began to lose my stuff and recognize that what God provided was more than enough. Lord, may I begin each day by cloaking myself in Your armor. Guide me through each trial with Your wisdom. Though I may not always know how I will get through, I ask that You strengthen me by prayer and the Word. In Christ, amen.
