Op Shop break in creates huge cost for SPCA Thieves who broke into Whangarei SPCA’s Second Chance Op Shop in Kamo stole “just a few coins”, but cost the Whangarei animal welfare charity nearly $1000 worth of damage. The shop, on the corner of Lillian and Kamo Rds, had its’ front glass door smashed sometime between 5pm and 9pm on Monday April 28. Shop co-ordinator Sally Peek asks that anyone who saw a person or persons acting suspicious around that time or knows who committed the crime contact Whangarei Police on 09 435 4500. “They caused an awful lot of damage and I don’t know what they expected to find, we have notices up saying no cash is kept on the premise,” Mrs Peek says. “The only thing they stole was an almost empty donation box with just a few coins in it.” She says the donation box will no longer be kept on the premise. The estimated cost of repairing the damage is more than $800 and this bill will have to be paid for by Whangarei SPCA as their insurance carries a $1000 excess.
