Open Letter To My PHIS Family Dear faculty and staff of the best - TopicsExpress

Open Letter To My PHIS Family Dear faculty and staff of the best place to work in education in Hawaii, well when I say best I mean a place that allowed me to make a home and be proud of what we have done. When I came to Pahoa in 1980 I was just a young pup 21, to be exact. There were others who are still here at PHIS who dared to take the challenge of teaching at a school that by it reputation seem no one wanted to work at or if they were here they were working to get out of fast. PHIS thank you for giving me the opportunity to meet some of the most original families and co-workers that anyone could imagine. Just finding a place so ready to put up with me and mold this young kid into a seasoned faculty member is amazing, we went up and down, at times we floundered aimlessly adrift on a sea of misunderstanding which the newspapers seemed to always highlight the bad things which did happen at times. For the most part PHIS has been a wonderful school because of the people who came and went but mostly because of the people who stayed learned and grew with me. The relationships and the wealth of knowledge I gained from everyone of you I would not trade for the world. Students here are amazing because their hearts always lead them, school became family and we became uncles and aunties to thousands. I have received hundreds of communications from former students and some of them are teachers at our school and other schools throughout the state, each with wonderful stories bringing back memories to give strength and healing. I often wonder what makes any of us and them want to teach, but from their comments it is clear that they saw the love we shared in good times and bad and wanted to enter a profession which offers so much by the way of true human inter action with others. I am glad to have had that inter action with all of you and look forward to my return to my home here at PHIS sometime late in the second quarter or starting second semester. Thank you all from the Support Staff, Office Staff, Administration, Students, Parents and the loving community which we have the pleasure to serve in as mentors and guardians of the youth in our profession humbly called education.
