Opening Day: The Million Dollar Question: When is the course and Range opening? We can finally see green grass but the ground is still frozen! Everyone here at the dunes is more than ready for the 2014 golf season and we hope we are only a couple weeks away. We will be sure to send out an email, post on twitter and facebook once we have a set date! We are also very excited for our members and guests to see the changes we have made to the facility over the winter! Letter From the Super: The winter of 2013-2014 will be remembered for many years to come. The weather events resulted in this ice sheets forming on many putting greens with the most severe conditions appearing to be here in the Midwest. The primary cause of death to turf-grass under ice sheets is from oxygen depletion and toxic gas accumulation from soil microbial respiration. The warmer the soil is when the ice forms the faster the oxygen is depleted by the microbes and the sooner toxic anaerobic gasses like butanol and ethyl butyrate will form. These gases are what superintendents often refer to as the smell of death and unfortunately many, including myself have experienced this smell in the past few weeks. The day estimates for poa annua survival under ice range from 45 to 90 days and for creeping bent-grass 90-120 days. Many putting greens have been covered in ice for greater than 60 days. This might have been the winter that mother nature dictates turf like and death no matter what actions were taken by superintendents. It has already been a very taxing winter and unfortunately spring doesnt look like it will be any easier. We will continue to update the situation as spring arrives.
