Opening Night at Cinequest! Press Pass students Miguel Vargas and Benjamen Neduva attended. Here are their reviews ~ enjoy! Cinequest Opening Night, by Benjamen Neduva If there was one word to describe the opening night of the 2014 Cinequest film festival, it would be: WOW. Before the event began, there was an incredible organist playing recognizable tunes like The Phantom of the Opera, Somethings Gotta Give, and some Disney classics. But even the amazing pre-show cant come close to the following events. Eric Kohn, a film enthusiast and critic, talked to the audience about his travels and journalism career as part of his acceptance of the Media Legacy Award. And if that isnt enough to blow you away, the inventor of the cell phone Martin Cooper made a special appearance! Cooper was given the Maverick Innovator Award, and came to tell us about his past, and the future. To top this all off, the audience watched the premier of a fantastic comedy film. With a combination of heart-warming ideology and clever hilarity, Don McKellars The Grand Seduction has well-earned its place on my top ten comedies list! Cinequest Opening Night, by Miguel Vargas As we walked into the California Theater, my friend and I were immediately overthrown by how incredibly gorgeous the theater was. In less than a minute, a short animated film began, a parody of the game Zelda. Afterwards, a man walked onto the stage and began to talk about Cinequest. He introduced a film director, and then began to talk about the film we had previously watched. He described his film-making career and how he was inspired to create such a film of how love overcomes everything, even in the most devastating of times. He also discussed how all people can connect through movies, which is the main theme of the Cinequest this year, Connect. It was outstanding (his speech), and he talked about growing up as a kid and being inspired to make films. Afterwards, the same man that introduced the film director introduced an award that was being given out to person that has shown true innovation, Martin Copper and his invention of the cell phone. He was very modest about it all, saying that it wasnt really an innovation, rather just a step forward into the future. He talked about his experience, and his modesty was quite pleasant. Finally, a lady walked out onto the stage to introduce the film, The Grand Seduction and the film began. The film, The Grand Seduction, is about a small harbor, Tickle Cove, that is in dire need of help. The town needs a factory built to make better jobs for the citizens, so they can actually start earning money. The only thing is that they need a doctor to seal the deal. So they set for on a plan to seduce the doctor, Paul Lewis, in order to get him to stay in the small town permanently. The movie had a great start, introducing the small town and all the people in it. Everyone had their own story and everyone had a purpose, which was a small touch in the movie that made a big difference. The simplicity of the movie was very interesting in that it allowed for a much bigger meaning behind it. It definitely showed the essence of being connected because Paul Lewis disconnected from the busy world he lived in and took in the fresh air and actually had a change of heart, also the whole town turned around and changed their ways just for this one man, a true heart-warming story indeed! The editing style of the movie was very nice and organized, and the whole film was so well written, it was a stellar movie.
