Orangutans living in Borneo and Sumatra have had 90% of their habitat destroyed in the past 20 years. An area the size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour in Indonesia and Malaysia to make way for the production of palm oil. 12 million hectares is destroyed every year to produce the 50 million tonnes of palm oil found in almost half of all household products. Government data has shown over 50,000 orangutans have already died as a result of the deforestation. Experts say if this pattern of destruction and exploitation continues, orangutans will be extinct in the wild within 3 to 12 years. A new documentary being released in Australia follows fifteen young people from around the world who are seeking to stop the destruction. ‘Rise of the Eco Warriors’ was produced with the aim to educate and inspire other young people from around the world.
