(Oregon) Earth Year: Climate change brings more Lyme disease After a summer of puzzling illness, my daughter was diagnosed with Lyme disease. She asked her first physician if she could have Lyme and was told “we don’t have Lyme disease in Oregon.” This delayed her treatment by a couple of months, making a difference between a cure or developing a chronic and possibly debilitating illness. We suspect she picked it up on a visit to eastern Oregon. In talking with folks since her diagnosis, I am amazed how many people have contracted the illness and other tick-borne diseases in the Pacific Northwest, including in our own McDonald Forest.
