Originally posted this New Years Eve whil in a bit of a reflective mood. Added a line or two and put it back up in case you missed it. 2014 – Some Thoughts About to close the book on one of the stranger years I have seen in a long time. I saw more people do more things that left me scratching my head than I can remember. Some of the things I saw made me think of the Jimmy Buffett song, “A Permanent Reminder of a Temporary Feeling”. I seemed to find myself answering more questions with, “I told Jimmy Buffett that story and he wrote a song about it called, I don’t know and I don’t care”. With that in mind,... I offer a few observations on 2014. Some things I learned and some things that I knew but I got a refresher course in. 1.No matter what you do for some people, they don’t, won’t, and never will appreciate it. 2.Life ain’t fair and never will be. 3.To teach someone something is the ultimate in sharing. Every time I teach a SCUBA class and see the students learn I am reminded that I took a slice out of my life and shared it with them. No better feeling of satisfaction. 4.Saw a few folks get together that made me wonder and saw a few folks that parted ways that made me wonder. 5.Some people will use you and push you away. Left me feeling that one day they just might drift back around and find out just how far they had pushed you away. 6.Some friendships got a lot deeper over the year. Got a great bunch of guys I call friends that we are all full of our own version of crap but are as solid as there is, great character guys and each in their own way have a deep faith in God. 7.Can’t remember when more folks were ready to get a year over with and get a new one started. 8.Out of all the folks I saw do things wrong, there were still a few that did things right. 9.Met a few good folks. One in particular is a new friend from South Carolina. Started out meeting last New Year’s Eve and wound up suffering through LSU losing to Notre Dame. Here’s to you, Butch and to many more great times! 10. Added one or two folks to the list of people I wouldn’t piss on if they were on fire. 11. Resolved to meet face to face a dozen or more people I am Facebook friends with that just seem like the kind of character people I would like to know a little better. 12.And to all of us who struggled, scratched and clawed our way through 2014, hang on for the ride cause the best is yet to come!
