Our Brickwall of the Day today comes from Coral Shearer, who writes: "My big brick wall is my Great Grandmother Mary Ann VICKERY nee GEORGE. Mary Ann George came to New Zealand from London on the “Ramsey” sailed March 27th 1870 arrive Lyttelton NZ June 16th 1870. She is listed – GEORGE Mary Ann 19yrs from Northamptonshire, General Servant. Marriage to Benjamin Vickery on 15 December 1870 at St Peter’s Riccarton Christchurch ages Full. “Intention to Marry Register” for the year 1870 - dated 3 December 1870 she is spinster, Servant, age 21, dwelling Christchurch and length of Residence 8 months. All correct except age if she was only 19 coming out to NZ. I realise she would have altered her age so she could marry as she was under the age of 21. On her nine children’s birth certificates she has place of birth as England or Northampton England for the first four children and then on the next two she has Scaldwell Northampton and last three Northamptonshire England. It wasn’t until I bought my Grandmothers birth certificate that I found she was born in Scaldwell I had been working on Northampton and found Mary Ann George daughter of William but they were from Gayton which is 14 miles away from Scaldwell. I was in contact with the Gayton George families and they said that their Mary Ann George had disappeared and they could not find where she had gone to and we all felt that we were on the right track. But after getting my Grandmothers birth certificate I realised I was on the wrong line – or am I??? I have checked all records on Scaldwell and there is only one William George living in Scaldwell wife Elizabeth but they do not have a daughter Mary Ann. They had daughters Martha b 1843, married 1867, Lizzie Ann b 1846 died 1847 and Elizabeth b 1848 married 1870. I have ordered birth certificates of Mary Ann George (in yellow) from 1844 – 1854. Jun 1844 Scaldwell d/o Richard George married William Moore. Jun 1845 Long Buckley d/o David married Thomas Eli Bedford. Mar 1847 Gayton d/o William – unable to find any more about her. Sep 1851 d/o Samuel married James Jackson (did not buy this one as it was in Hemington to far away. Mar 1852 Gayton d/o Walter – in census still living at home in 1871. Dec 1854 Scaldwell d/o George George married Josiah Mabbutt. Mary Ann Vickery died 8th March 1909 age 60yrs in Opunake, Parents – father William George mother unknown. Born –Northampton, England. Living in New Zealand 40 years" Can anyone help, please?
