Our Christmas Miracle Heres a story weve been sitting on for a few days waiting to see what the outcome would be. Between Christmas and New Years a long-time patient of ours, Chip, became very ill while visiting family in Markstay. Chip was hanging out in the basement with the other family dogs while everyone else was upstairs for dinner. When it came time to leave, Chip collapsed at the door, obviously extremely ill. He was rushed to the hospital from Markstay and was near death when he got here. Chips stomach had twisted and was massively bloated - a condition known as gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV). We rushed him to emergency surgery, but it looked really bad. A large part of his stomach was dark purple-black due to the extreme pressure and had a hole in it. Perforation is a really bad prognostic indicator and few dogs with this amount of severe damage survive. This is the worst case weve seen that actually survived surgery; we honestly didnt expect him to survive this incident. But he did. He was discharged after 3 days in the hospital and has been recovering for about a week at home, getting better every day. Chip is extra special to us because him and Dr. Rocheleau started out in practise together about 10 years ago. Both of them were a lot younger then and had more hair (the difference is Chips will grow back). So if we ever needed a Christmas miracle this was definitely a good time. Were extremely happy we got to send him home for the holidays - you know, like next years holidays.
