Our Family Florence Nightingale or Simply Manay Tering to her patients at the old Butuan General hospital ~ (*The Lady on the right is my auntie Tering in her nursing student uniform at the Southern Islands Hospital*) She was also our family doctor and a very good one who could really diagnose at the earliest onset of an illness just as good as any doctor of her time. It was from her that I have witnessed for the first time and first hand how to do wound care that started at my circumcision. I used to starch and iron her pristine white nurses cap. She never was with us during holiday dinners as she was always working days, evenings, nights shifts even on Christmas, New Years, Good Fridays, Easter Sundays, and all the holidays of the year until the day she retired. A graduate of the Southern Islands Hospital Nursing School, Teresa Conde Fortun-Nono, my dad s older sister, one of the pioneers, one of the most familiar faces at the Butuan Gen. along with great nurses like tia Salud Patanao, tia Nenita Montilla, tia Betty Jaen, tia Thelma Lasam, among others with Doctora Paz Busa, the one who always made a home call whenever one of us in the family was sick. Oh dear, now I miss you all, ladies with the white caps
