Our Honorable Group Managing Director, Mr. Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Textiles & Jute, Bangladesh Parliament and the former Amnesty International “prisoner of conscience” has been elected as the president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) - an international organization of parliaments of 166 member countries and 10 associate members. He defeated three other candidates – Speaker of Australia’s House of Representatives Bronwyn Bishop, Indonesian MP Nurhayati Ali Assegaf and former Speaker of the Maldives Parliament Abdulla Shahid . He has become the 28th president of the 125-years old organization established in 1889. He is the first Bangladeshi who has brightened the country’s image in the international arena. This rare feat is a milestone in the progress of parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh. During 1999–2001, as the youngest Member of the Cabinet, he successfully served as Deputy Minister, Ministry of Ports & Shipping and thereafter as the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Rural Development & Cooperatives – one of Bangladesh’s largest development Ministries.
