Our Offrenda for the Days of the Dead 2014. This is how we reclaim - TopicsExpress

Our Offrenda for the Days of the Dead 2014. This is how we reclaim the sacred of the Holiday. Owning it ourselves, instead of the candy companies. Last year, we were attacked here on FB by an overly earnest young lady who called me, and some of my friends, racist for wearing Sugar Skull Makeup, yet, we are keep the Holiday both in its traditional sense and in our own way. I have built offrendas for many years and it is a vital part of the season to us and our children. My daughter will know the names of her great grandparents and further. If you were to visit the Mexican towns, and the neighborhoods that I grew up around and in, you would find that Sugar Skull Makeup and Offrendas are everywhere and used in the same way. As party make up, as imagery. Cultural Appropriation and Racism are real issues. This isnt it. I think that if more folks adopted the actual traditions of the Days of the Dead, then the respect would be a vital idea of it.
