Our animals are more than just pets within our household, they are family and sometimes they become our heroes. In this case O Malley Rose, adopted from our facility a little over a year ago, has become a hero within her neighborhood. We want to thank Mj and and Jeff for sharing this beautiful story. Dear Lancaster SPCA, A resent event in our little neighborhood has prompted me to write to you to let you know how our dog OMalley Rose (adopted from Lancaster SPCA on October 4, 2013 ) helped to save our neighbors from a terrible fire. On September 11, 2014, at 2:30 AM, my husband and I were awakened by OMalley barking and standing up peering out our bedroom window. I was just about to tell her to be quiet and to go back to bed when I realized that our whole bedroom was aglow with yellow light! I sat up and looked out the window to see my neighbors entire 18th century German bank barn engulfed in flames to the point that the flames were higher than the silos! My husband Jeff was awaked too, and not knowing if the call to 911 had been made, he called right away. (the call had been made but no trucks had yet arrived at that point) I ran downstairs and out the front door, looking across Ramona Road, I soon realized that while two of my neighbors were awake and out of their house, the other ones, Marshall, Sherree and their daughter must be still asleep, because all their lights were off. I ran across the road and banged on their door screaming their names to wake up, that there was a fire. I was able to wake them and soon Marshall was at the door. He ran to get his cars moved, which were right between the front of the barn and a garage/goat shed. Fortunately, no animals were inside that barn or they would have surely perished, but there was one small pet pigmy goat named Daisy inside the goat shed. The front of the shed was completely open and facing the fire, the flames and heat burning our skin as Marshall attempted to move the cars, and I tried to rescue Daisy. I couldnt get to her gate, it was way too hot, I couldnt even touch the fence, and too time consuming to open. I called to a fireman who was standing in the driveway to get me an axe to break through the back of her shed, but he wouldnt help me at all ( no water had yet arrived, so he wasnt doing anything anyway ) . Finally, my husband came and after explaining what we needed to do, he went back across the road to get a pry bar. Jeff ripped off three of the boards from the back of the garage. Hot embers were flying over the top of the shed by that time and were all over the grass, we were all in our bare feet and Pjs. Sherree called for Daisy, to come to mommy! Daisy was so frightened, we were afraid she wouldnt come to us. But she did slowly and timidly walk to the back where a hole had been made in her shed. Sherree reached in and grabbed a horn, I reached in and grabbed the other. Sherree said PULL! and we got her out, I wrapped my arms around her middle and carried her, running like crazy away from that fire! I took her over to our dog pen, where she stayed a few days until her fence was repaired , her shed cleaned out, and fresh straw and hay put in. Had our OMalley Rose not barked the alarm at 2:30 am that day, so that I could wake up my neighbors, the cars would have exploded, the garage/goat would have caught fire, and little Daisy would have definitely died. Thought you may like to hear of a good dog hero story, close to home and right from Lancaster SPCA . We love our OMalley Rose so much, and now Daisy does too! Love, M.J., Jeff, and OMalley Rose McFalls
