Our department sponsored an Active Shooter Training put on by GTI-Government Training Institute the week of June 23-27. Facilities were provided by the Clearwater County Sheriffs Department. The training is designed to prepare police officers on how to respond to an active shooter in a school setting. There have been over 220 school shootings in the past 3 decades. with 31 so far this year. These can happen anywhere including Indian Country. On March 21, 2005 Jeffrey Weise, 16, Shot and killed 5 students, one teacher and an unarmed security guard and wounding 7 others, after having killed his grandfather and grandfathers girlfriend. Schools are not the only concern. In February of this year a former tribal leader shot and killed 4 people at the tribal offices at Cedarville Rancheria in California. With this training our department will be conducting active shooter drills at schools, tribal government offices in order to prepare students, staff, and workers on what to do to survive such an event. Attending the training were Nez Perce Tribal Police Officers Zach Broncheau, Cory Ranstrom, Wayde White Eagle, Kayde Johnson, Mike Stegner, Shane Auginaush, and Kendall Bowser. The Tribal Police provided scholarships for our neighboring agencies to send officers. Those officers were Deputy Levitt from Nez Perce County, Officer Hathaway from Moscow Police, Austin Smith from Lewis County and Deputy Brokop and Deputy Maas from Clearwater County. The class was taught by Pete Spagnolo, a highly qualified law enforcement veteran with GTI.
