The Lion Sleeps Tonight, sometimes known as Wimba Way, Awimbawe, or Wimoweh, and originally Mbube, was written & recorded by Solomon Linda in 1939. Originally composed only in Zulu, the song was adapted and covered by numerous pop & folk artists of the 1950s. With English lyrics by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, George David Weiss, and Albert Stanton, The Tokens version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight, entered the charts November 19th, 1961 ... in its sixth week, the song had reached the top spot, where it remained for three weeks, becoming one of the biggest tunes of the year, on its way to becoming Certified Gold.
