Our fish derby has always been a popular event and as such, we intend to give it a go again next year despite the cancellation that was necessary this year. We hope to get some feedback not only from past participants, but also those of you that have intended to try it but could not for various reasons. The committee members have proposed changing the venue of the Derby itself, and also, the days of the week the derby is typically held. The following is a letter from our committee chairman, Claudelle Halcomb. Please take the time to give a quick response if the changes interest you! 2015 Auburn CHP Fish Derby The following is a summary of the proposed 2015 Auburn CHP Fish Derby. Response from readers and possible participants will determine if “The Derby” will continue. Without significant response, reflecting participation, the derby may fade away. The proposal is as follows; Entrant registration on a Thurs. (more than likely 3rd Thurs in June) Competition fishing on Fri, Sat, and till noon on Sunday) Proposed NEW site and waterways in competition: Registration, weigh-in, dinner and Raffle at Loon Lake. Lakes for fishing: Loon Lake, Stumpy Meadows, Union Valley, Ice House Reservoir, Union Valley Reservoir PROs and CONs: The drive from I-80 to Loon Lake is approximately 60 miles from the SR-49 exit in Auburn and 40 miles from the Ice House exit on US 50. The first 15 miles on SR-49 are curvy, but the logging trucks use it regularly. Water levels are normally full in June, as I experienced this “drought year”. We spent three days on June 20, 21, 22 and the water at Loon Lake was at campground level. Remaining lakes were in the 90 percentile. Loon Lake is not a downrigger-friendly lake due to rock formations, but the brown and rainbow populations are healthy. Union Valley provides all of our derby categories (browns, rainbows, mackinaw, and kokanee) Ice House and Stumpy Meadows are limited to browns and rainbows. The campgrounds at Loon Lake do not take reservations (according to camp hosts but not online information), but if we decide to continue the Derby, reservations could be secured through derby management. Ideally, all participants could stay at a campsite within walking distance of the registration/weigh-in/dinner area. Camping at these lakes appears to be cheaper than the rates we previously paid at the Logger Campgrounds on Stampede. There is a store nearby at Ice House, only five miles from Union Valley. We are hoping this change will be for the better and are hoping for some feedback. We are not set-in-stone on any of this at the moment. Maybe another lake has better facilities? Maybe we can add more lakes and streams to the list? Please provide us some feedback and we will consider making appropriate adjustments. Thanks!!! Eric
