Our friend and colleague Charlie Stuchell has passed away. One of the first people I met when I began working in news in the Tri-Cities, Charlie had a contact list that was head and shoulders above everyone else’s. It seemed that Charlie knew everyone and almost everyone contacted Charlie when something newsworthy had happened, or was about to. I had known Charlie for many years, but had not worked with him until about two and a half years ago when I came to Bristol Broadcasting. At our first news meeting, Charlie made a point of saying we needed to be sure, to confirm what we heard or thought. That we should go the extra mile to be right. And that’s the way Charlie conducted himself. Over the years, there were many health challenges.. a liver transplant and numerous bouts with cancer. But, Charlie Stuchell had a work ethic that was unmatched. He never took the time to tell you how he felt or what he was going through. He focused on what his job required and he did it to the best of his ability. Any manager would love to have a station full of folks with Charlie Stuchell’s work ethic. His last medical issue was brain cancer. Charlie had surgery several weeks ago. Just a couple of days after the surgery, the phone in the SuperTalk studio rang at 5:30 in the morning. Only one person called us at 5:30 in the morning.. it was Charlie. He told our show producer, Jennifer Hayes, that he was doing pretty well and was being moved to rehab. He expected to be back at work in a month. And that was Charlie. There was never any conversation about whether he would come back to work.. It was always when he would come back to work. This time, Charlie was not able to return. And we already miss him. And we will continue to miss Charlie Stuchell. Even if you never met him in person, he likely impacted your life. Monitoring traffic conditions around the Tri-Cities each morning and afternoon, letting us know what to expect. During severe weather, keeping us informed on the way the weather might impact our lives and our travels. His contact list constantly feeding him news stories that were important to our community. We’ll miss him. We’ll all miss Charlie Stuchell.
