Our holidays are two(plus Jumuah) It saddens me that Muslims need this, but here goes: 1. `Idayn(`Id ul Adha and `Id ul Fitr) and Yawm ul Jumuah. Thats it. If those arent enough holidays for you, knowing that there are 52 weeks in a year and Jumuah falls every week, then Im just going to assume that you are just keen on imitating the Kuffar. 2. Ponder two things: the times it is forbidden to pray and this narration: Reported by Anas may Allah be pleased with him) who said: When the Prophet(sal Allahu `alayhi wasallam) reached Madeenah, he noticed that the people of Madeenah used to celebrate two specific days. The Prophet(sal Allahu `alayhi wasallam) asked: Why are you celebrating these two days? They answered,We used to play and have fun on these days during the pre-Islamic period. The Prophet(sal Allahu `alayhi wasallam)said: Allah has replaced these two days with something better, Eed Al-Fitr and Eed Al-Adh-Haa (Ahmad and Abu Daawood) The interpreters of the Hadeeth stated that they celebrated these two days only because the weather was moderate at the times they celebrated them and not for any religious purpose. Yet, Islam abrogated them. -Muslims are forbidden to pray during the times when the sun rises, is at its zenith, and when it sets, because the polytheist sun-worshipers used to pray at these times, and it was mentioned that it(the sun) rises between two horns of the devil and the polytheists used to prostate to it at this time, and despite the fact that a Muslim prays to Allah and not to the horns of the devil or the sun, the Prophet(sal Allahu `alayhi wasallam) forbade us from performing the prayer at that time regardless of our intention. So here we see that it is haraam to imitate the non-Muslims not only in inward actions(beliefs, intentions, and other actions of the heart), but also in OUTWARD actions that are unique to them. This includes many cultural practices that are seen erroneously in the modern age as not being religious actions. 3. Linguistically, {eid} is something that returns, so annually repeating days should not be specified or marked for celebration except by the Shariah. Only Allah has the right to make days special or blessed. 4. These ayat are not enough for you?: And verily, this is my straight path, so follow it, and do not follow other paths, for they will separate you away from His path. This He has ordained for you that you may become Al-muttaqun(the pious). (Al-An’am, Ayah 153) And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers’ way, We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell, what an evil destination. (An-Nisa’, Ayah 115) And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers. (Ale Imraan Ayah 85) Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with you unless you follow their way. Say: “The Guidance of Allah,-that is the (only) Guidance.” Were you to follow their desires after the knowledge which has reached you, then you would not find neither Protector nor helper against Allah. (Baqarah Ayah 120) 5. These ahadith arent enough for you?: Imam Ahmad and other hadith collectors reported a good hadtih that the Prophet Muhammad(sal Allahu `alayhi wasallam)said: Whoever imitates a people, he is considered as one of them. He who innovates something in our deen that is not part of it, will have it rejected. (Bukhari and Muslim ) And in other narration from Imam Muslim: He who does an act which is not in agreement with our deen, will have it rejected. 6. If you think that a certain holiday is not included in these prohibitions(such as Thanksgiving), know that religion is defined as way of life based on beliefs. So even if something is secular in origin, or atheistic in motive, it is still religious(re-read that as many times as you need to). And that is only if imitating disbelievers in what is unique to them is not enough for you. 7. Joining in non-Muslim celebrations for dawah, or in the case of Thanksgiving, to maintain family ties? Know two things: 1.These are lame excuses and 2. Muslims should stay away from doubtful matters. -How are you giving dawah to non-Muslims by making them think that something that is haraam in Islam is permissible? Youre actually making Islam look like a ends justify the means type of religion in which people will do anything to win converts, which ultimately makes a thinking person believe it is false, or will cause doubts for the sincere heart in the future. - There are how many days in the year? Annually singling out a day, which makes it an eid by the way, which happens to fall on a non-Muslim holiday, is really the most ridiculous argument for maintaining family ties. These types of situations are compromises only for the Muslims. Do your non-Muslim friends and family fast the whole month of Ramadan with you, tasua and Ashoora, and the Day of Arafah, to accommodate you? Do your non-Muslim female friends wear hijab when they know they are going to be around you? Please! Maintain your family ties year round, and dont be like the secularists who water down love, togetherness, friendship, and family through fake holidays and celebrations, while they neglect you on most other days. And always remember that maintaining family ties has nothing to do with disobeying Allah to please the creation.
