Our last week in Iowa allowed us to see a few more places of interest. First we visited the Museum of Art in Cedar Rapids, as well as the studio of Grant Wood, creator of one of the most well- known paintings in the world, “American Gothic.” Then we went to Backbone State Park where I hiked the trail named for a “spine” of granite and stone which traverses through the middle of the park. From there we went to Dyersville to see the actual Baseball Field built in the middle of a cornfield, for the movie “Field of Dreams. People actually go there and play baseball just to see the place. Of course you can see the picture of Glenda “coming out of the corn.” As Kevin Costner said in the movie, “No, this isn’t heaven, It’s Iowa.” The next stops were in Elk Horn and Kimbleton, both villages settled by immigrants from Denmark and both proud of their Danish heritage. In fact here is located the Museum of Danish Immigrants. Our last stop was in Denison, Iowa, hometown of Donna Reed who received an Oscar for her role in “From Here to Eternity” and then went on to produce, direct, and star in her own TV show, “The Donna Reed Show.” A one-hundred year old Opera Theater has been restored by the community as a Theater for the Performing Arts in her memory.
