Our latest intake of officer trainees were put throughout their paces during their induction course run by the Outward Bound Trust at Eskdale in Cumbria. The 4 day course is designed to instill a sense of MEF identity and instigate a MEF support network. We introduce the trainees to each other and to the MEFs five course values so that the transition from school to college and later to life at sea is easier. Each of the exercises allow the trainees to explore and develop their understanding of our five core values. The value of respect in themselves and others is tested from arrival at the centre, and throughout the course as the trainees live, eat and work together, just as they will at college and at sea. Each trainee is made aware that they are responsible for their own future successes and failures. Resourcefulness is a quality valued at sea; during the course ingenuity and inventiveness are encouraged as problems are posed. The course stretches the physical and mental capacity of all our recruits, whatever their entry level or background, so determination is essential to get the job done. Finally, the trainees should take great pride in having succeed in living away from home for the first time with group of new faces and overcoming very challenging situations. We are certainly proud of you - well done and good luck!
