Our new medicinal garden installation linked to the Gardens and World War 1 programme. Did you know that Gertrude Jekyll set aside a large area of land purely for the growing of marigolds (Calendula) which were shipped to France to treat burns victims? Sphagnum moss was used for dressings as it has highly absorbent properties and was cheaper than cotton. School children were sent out blackberry picking so that soldiers could be supplied with jam especially in 1918 when there was a failure in the fruit crop. Blackberries are rich in vitamin C. Garlic, thyme, lavender and sage were also used for antiseptic and antibacterial reasons and cornflowers for eye dressings.
