Our recent letter to the Melton Times about wind turbines, - TopicsExpress

Our recent letter to the Melton Times about wind turbines, although it didnt get published! Last week’s Melton Times showed how renewable energy in the form of wind turbines is catching the attention of many people around here as well as in many other parts of the country. Unfortunately most of the publicity seems to be given to opposition to such developments rather than a more balanced view. Some statements attributed to members of SMART (the group opposed to the proposed old airfield development in particular) imply the wish to ban any wind turbines anywhere in the borough and presumably many if not most other places. The Green Party believes that urgent action is needed to reduce dependence on fossil fuels through the development of renewable sources of energy, as well reducing consumption and improving energy efficiency. We in the Rutland and Melton constituency have not yet had the chance to examine details of the proposals for Melton airfield in full. Yet on the face of it a former airfield, partly concreted and paved and already with light industrial use, would seem to be a sensible location to consider for wind turbines and perhaps solar panels. To promote as sustainable an economy as possible in Melton and elsewhere is a goal which we should all be backing, in terms of energy as well as food and other forms of local business. Wind and solar energy production should surely be part of the mix of technologies that will be needed for the foreseeable future. Hoping that the present course can be maintained without cost to us directly is not an option, and we would urge the people of Melton to consider carefully what kinds of development might be appropriate for the airfield and elsewhere in the borough, rather than simply always saying ‘no’.
