Our sinful pleasures surround us with a short-lived, false sense - TopicsExpress

Our sinful pleasures surround us with a short-lived, false sense of peace, like beautifully patterned wallpaper that eventually discolors, parches and peels away. In the theoretical mind, the wallpaper is that comfortable, aesthetic image of peace held in place by our worldly addictions to lust, pride and overindulgence acting as the cheaply set glue. As intrinsic to the gratification induced by sin, the adhesive swiftly loses it tack, our beautifully layered surroundings beginning to shed almost immediately, threatening to collapse to the very bottom. We hurriedly respond by slathering more glue—more sin upon sin—to repeat that appeal of harmony, but each time the image grows more unbalanced, blotchy, disjointed. Withdrawing with more rapid succession, the process cycles in perpetuity until, fatigued and defeated, solace falls away completely. We find ourselves alone, engulfed in emptiness. Where God has written into each of our hearts a deep yearning for Him, many of us fill the void with everything apart from God, and we become necessarily frustrated. This is not an unnatural reaction. It is not an oddity in response to godless pleasure. It is God communicating with His children in a pursuit of love. True peace can only be found by walking with Christ in total surrender and walking away from our sin.
