Our son has suffered from refractory epilepsy since he was six years old. We have tried every single suitable medication to treat his seizures. We followed our neurologist’s advice without question until he suggested sedatives to help with behaviours. He wanted to add medications as well to treat insomnia caused by the medication Lamictal. Jeremy has been on Lamictal since he was six years old. He has not slept well since then. He is now twenty three years old. Jeremy is also prescribed Midazolam for prolonged and status seizures. It carries the risk of respiratory arrest. In Australia, our epilepsy associations run information and training sessions on how to administer Midazolam. In Australia every day, people using Midazolam are at risk. Midazolam should not be administered for the first time outside a HOSPITAL setting. When Midazolam is prescribed it should be trialled in hospital to monitor respiratory function. Dont rely on a neurologist to tell you this will help your Childs’ seizure without risk! Demand trial in hospital for your child! Jeremy has not required Midazolam since August this year. Not once, and while he has needed emergency medication it has not come in the form one might expect from a pharmaceutical perspective. After you have advice from your specialist consider this video. I wish every child newly diagnosed with epilepsy had this opportunity. You might not agree and that is fine. But Jeremy is here to tell you cannabis saves lives!
