Our thoughts are with those in the Solomon Islands who have experienced severe and deadly flash floods over the past few days. The Solomon Islands have 1,000 small islands and atolls with a population of 500,000 spread throughout, 83 percent are in remote areas. 40 percent of the population is below the age of 14. According to the World Bank, of the 20 countries in the world with the highest average annual disaster losses scaled by gross domestic product, eight are Pacific island nations including Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, Niue, Tonga, the Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, and the Cook Islands.
