Out in Cascade in the summer of 62 I was visiting with a friend as our cars sat side by side in the middle of the street. I was known to be a bit of a drag racer at the time and my red 62 chevy was known to be fast.....by the cops. As we finished visiting I revved the engine to 5000 rpm dropped the clutch and then......looked in front of me. There was the sheriff turning left right across my front end, family in the car and the wifes eyes as big as silver dollars. I hit the brakes, I missed them and I hit the gas and left town. I was driving on a suspended license so I had to leave....fast. I got away. And then two weeks later I was having supper with my grandmother when there was a knock at the door. It was the sheriff. I went to jail. My one phone call was to my grandmother to bail me out. She did. We came to trial a month or so later, we moved the trial to Great Falls where I ask for a trial by jury. That was when I hired my dad to be my lawyer. We almost won and some would say we did. The jury believed our argument that the people of Cascade were picking on the young folks from Ulm and they did say I was guilty, but they set the fine at $10.00. Everything would have been fine except the Highway Patrol found out and suspended my license for another 6 months and that how I came to get married to my first wife.
