Out of an abundance of caution for consumers, Happy Apple Company has issued a recall of all Happy Apple caramel apples produced during the 2014 season. The Center for Disease Control has noted 29 illnesses in 10 states linked to the outbreak and they have advised consumers not to each commercially produced, pre-packaged caramel apples until more is known. We recently received notice of recall from an apple supplier to our California production facility related to the CDC’s investigation and decided to follow through with a full recall of all Happy Apple product from both facilities. At this time, there has not been a direct link of the current listeria outbreak to caramel apples or the Happy Apple brand. We are working collaboratively with the FDA in their investigation into the potential source of listeria in caramel apples. Happy Apples ceased operations at the end of October as part of the normal, seasonal shut down and the caramel apples produced are no longer available in stores, however, out of an abundance of caution and concern for consumer safety, we are recommending that consumers follow the advice of the CDC and remove any caramel apples you may have in storage and dispose of them in a secure container. Now, as always, customer safety is our number one priority, which is why we decided to go above and beyond with this voluntary recall.
