Outline of the Chaplaincy ministry: Much of the work of a Chaplain is based on the renewal and rebuilding of people’s lives, both emotional and spiritual at their time of need. The broken walls ministry aspect of a Chaplain is based on the scriptures found in Isaiah 58:12. Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; You will be called repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings. • Rebuild (re-establishing biblical foundations) • Raise Up (to equip, empower, and release) • Repair (Jesus the healer coming to bring physical, emotional, and spiritual healing) • Restore (restoration in all areas of life As much as this scripture in its proper context was aimed at the rebuilding of Jerusalem, it has come to mean for many a rebuilding of community, of family and of people’s lives devastated by trauma, crisis, addictions, sorrow and grief. The chaplain, in his greater congregation of the community to which he or she is called has an opportunity to bring God’s healing touch, his presence of peace and glorious compassion. Isaiah 61: 1 also writes : He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, To proclaim freedom for the captives, And release from darkness for the prisoners. This scripture declares that the people we meet are broken, hurt, oppressed and struggling in emotional and spiritual darkness. Whether it is a person struggling with depression, grief or despair, we as chaplains are provided with an avenue and link to these people to provide assistance and guidance that an ordinary church may not have an opportunity to make contact with. It is why, the scripture in Matthew are so important for the type of ministry we are embarking on. Matthew 5:13: says: You are the Light of the World. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Whatever our personal journey up to this point or reason for answering the call to the ministry of the Chaplain, God calls us to be a light in this darkness. Therefore when we do set out to be a Chaplain, our walk with Christ needs to be deep, meaningful and intimate in order to let the light of Christ shine forth Here are the (potential) duties of a Chaplain: Any scenes at which there has been a fatality and there are secondary victims, i.e. family on the scene that have been severely traumatized, and in the opinion of the attending paramedic, are in need of help the Trauma Support SA Chaplaincy Service Any scene at which the attending paramedic is busy with a resuscitation but anticipates that the resuscitation will not be successful, and there are next of kin present who may need to be informed of the failure of the resuscitation Where a successful suicide has taken place, and particularly where there are traumatized family members.
