Over the past few days, Sunset Lake has been showing signs of fish - TopicsExpress

Over the past few days, Sunset Lake has been showing signs of fish stress with large numbers of fish close to the shoreline and at the surface of the lake. These fish behaviors indicate low oxygen levels in the water column, which appears to be related to large number of ‘brown’ plankton species in the lake. Plankton uses a high amount of the lake’s available oxygen at night, when it cannot produce oxygen by photosynthesis, resulting in critically low levels of oxygen for the fish. These conditions make it probable that we will experience an extensive fish kill on Sunset Lake. Even though there is an aerator on the lake, it simply cannot keep up with the oxygen demands and an event such as this will simply need to run its course. It is likely that fish have died and sunk to the lake bottom. After a few days, these fish will bloat up and come to the surface of the lake, which could be during Main Event Weekend. We have plans in place to remove these fish as needed over the weekend. We will assess the extent of the fish kill and make further plans for restocking based on this assessment.
