Overlooked training principle #2 (which goes along with #1). 2. Keep the horses attention captured. A horse in training is just like a kid in school - if his attention wanders away from the teacher, hes not able to absorb the lesson being taught. Theres a simple way to monitor a horses attention, and thats to watch his ears. They point toward whatevers on his mind. When theyre flicking back to the person in the saddle, thats where his attentions been captured. But when theyre aimed straight forward or trained on something passing by, the riders being ignored in favor of another focus. If the rider habitually allows that to continue without doing something to remind the horse, Hey, Im still up here, the horse will learn that its OK for his mind to wander when someones on his back.
